I've seen ones that used metal--and not the long metal claws you see on some gear, but actual utilitarian equipment that was used for hunting. Those were pretty neat.
Wonder if you could get little pieces of scale mail to attach to the gloves. Would not be so fun for the cats, but would look better, yes?
